Conversion Rumors?

Another link to American Papist, this one regarding rumors of prominent politicians who are considering entering the Church.

The conversion rumor that sounds most likely involves former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Coincidentally, just yesterday, one of St. Blog's most prominent Catholic bloggers declared Speaker Gingrich to be "disgusting" (in, ironically, a post admonishing conservative Catholics not to demonize those with whom we disagree politically).

Good thing for Speaker Gingrich that Jesus seems to be somewhat more accomodating to "disgusting" sinners.

Go ahead and name Mark Shea, Jay... he's the one publicly smearing Gingrinch.

I have no love for Gingrinch's well-documented personal failings, but find it curious that Mark, who postures as an arbiter of things Catholic and Christian, flings around hateful, loaded rhetoric with such abandon. It surely does nothing to create an inviting atmosphere for a potential convert.

May God bring about this conversion.

Looking at Mark's post from yesterday that mentions Newt, the disgusting comment is in reference to Jack Ryan. Mark mentioned Newt's divorce and noted it's "classiness."

And in so doing shows, as usual, he doesn't even know the facts surrounding the case. But pesky little things called "facts" have never been a big selling point for Mr. Shea.

The original post (before Mark revised it) referred to "the disgusting Newt Gingrich", as this comment at Mark's post will attest.

Even the reference to Jack Ryan was added later, as Mark's original post libeled Obama's pro-life devout Catholic predecessor, Peter Fitzgerald.

And even the slur against Ryan is somewhat calumnious, given the circumstances surrounding the accusation against him.

So, he had called Newt "disgusting." C'est la vie... I had only seen the revised edition. Ultimately, my original comment here was meant to be in service of accuracy, not as a defense of Mr. Shea.

Gingrich, if he enters the Church, will have much to confess. Perhaps he will simply say, with eyes downcast, Forgive me Lord a sinner. Those moving towards God always have my prayers though their sins be as scarlet. However, as I know from personal experience, pride can be the deadliest of sins, a truth Mark might take to heart.

I quit reading Mark Shea almost as soon as I starting reading Mark Shea.
