Socialists Call for Pope's Arrest in Australia

A coalition of leftist interest groups is planning quite a welcome for the Pope when he goes to Australia for World Youth Day:
A SOCIALIST youth organisation has called for a citizen's arrest of the Pope when he arrives in Sydney for World Youth Day (WYD) next month.

Resistance, a member of the NoToPope Coalition, is advocating the pontiff's arrest on the basis of his continued stand against contraception.

Resistance spokeswoman Lauren Carroll Harris said the Pope's view constituted a conspiracy to murder, because the church's opposition to condoms leads to more people becoming infected with HIV.

Under Australian law, anyone can make a citizens arrest if they believe, on reasonable grounds, a person is committing or has just committed an offence.

"This short-sighted and dogmatic stance towards both contraception use and education has placed millions of people around the world in great danger of contracting the deadly HIV virus," she said in a statement.

"Without access to contraception many more lives will be lost needlessly every day around the globe."

***
The NoToPope Coalition, which includes members of Sydney's atheist, gay and environmental communities, plans to hand out condoms to pilgrims during the event, which runs from July 15 to 20.

Pope Benedict XVI is due to arrive in Sydney on July 13 for his first visit to Australia.

I'm sorry. I'm going to be frank. These kids are morons.

Now, knowing a little something about how student groups run in Canada, its very likely NOT youth organizing this, but a strong 'other' lobby with a paid staff and a youth 'front'.

The kids are still morons to go along with this. Even as a teen, I would have thought they were morons. My kids think they are morons. They are.

On a more serious note, there are some politicians in Australia who echo the 'logic' that teaching abstinence causes death.

I'm sure the security will be sufficient , and the result (goal?) will be a media event in itself.

Cardinal Pell, I'm sure, will have plenty of opportunity to address this. Hopefully the 'NoToPope' guys won't incite any 'too enthusiastic' responses from pilgrims. Most of the pilgrims probably have not faced 'in your face' aggressive protesters, and everybody should prepare their group ahead of time.

I'm kinda glad we couldn't afford to send my rugby guys to this one...

Condoms have been passed out in past WYD's without success. I doubt these guys will get any attention unless of course if they resort to violence which they've 'hinted' at in the article.

I predicted years ago, in the context of one of the side issues on the torture discussion ("human-rights" law), that the Pope would be arrested over the Church teaching on contraception under theories of universal human rights, international law and universal jurisdiction being bandied about. And that Catholics who were backing either of these things on some supposed "natural law" basis were capital-f Fools.

I hate being right.
