Presidents and Abortion

Daniel Allott writes at The Washington Times:
What are pro-lifers looking for in a presidential candidate? Fed up after more than three decades of court-imposed abortion-on-demand, and now tantalizingly close to realizing the 5-4 Supreme Court majority needed to overturn Roe v. Wade, the court's decision declaring a constitutional right to abortion, pro-lifers, the conventional wisdom holds, crave just one thing: a president who will appoint pro-life judges to the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, Mr. Giuliani's strategy [of promising to nominate "strict constructionists" to the bench] is founded on a false premise — that presidents cannot do much to affect abortion policy except to appoint judges. In fact, the president can do many things, both concretely and symbolically, to affect federal abortion policy other than appointing judges. Here is a partial list...

My Comments:
All I know is that the pro-life issue and the promise of nominating strict constructionist / originalist judges are about the only reasons that I bother to even consider the GOP.

Well, I also know that I do not trust Rudy Giuliani on this issue, among others, and will NOT support him under any circumstances.

There's a long list of things that presidents can do on abortion, many of which President Bush has done.

But no president, in my opinion, has done all that he might have to end abortion.

I'll be voting for someone who, if elected, will do all that can be done to end abortion.
