Sam Brownback Says Mitt Romney Needs to Address Abortion Change

From LifeNews:
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Until Wednesday, discussion about former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's position change on abortion and pro-life issues hasn't involved other potential Republican presidential candidates. That changed when pro-life Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback implied he's the better candidate for pro-life voters.

"I think you have to look at where he stood on the issues and what he said publicly," Brownback said of Romney in an interview with CBN on Wednesday.

"At times he's said different things on these issues. I think that's all going to come out during a long campaign," Brownback added.

"I do think when we get out on the campaign trail and when the campaign really gets fully engaged, there's going to be a lot of discussion about where do people actually stand on the issues and where have they been and where are they now and how reliable are they to stay that way," he explained.

Romney has run for office previously as a candidate who favors some limits on abortion but supported keeping it legal. As recently as 2002, he told Massachusetts residents he would not press for a change in the state's abortion laws.

However, Romney said he experienced an epiphany on pro-life issues when he was first confronted with the issue of embryonic stem cell research in 2005
[ED.: Should read: "... Romney said he experienced an epiphany on pro-life issues when he decided to seek the Republican nomination for President"]. He said he had a change of heart and now believes Roe v. Wade should be overturned so states can again prohibit abortions.

My personal opinion... Romney has said enough on this issue, and his record as governor should be reassuring enough for social conservatives. All but a very few of us have varying shades of pro lifeness - and that includes the very conservative and the very liberal.

I want to hear Mitt Romney talk about something else. Like that recent speech he gave about Iran. I wish we had a commander in chief right now who was as articulate. How about that video of Romney when he strengthened drunk driving laws in Massachusets - which he caught a lot of flack for in liberal Massachusets. In a few short sentences he completely eviscerated any and all counterarguments to his legislation.

You may think his record is "reassuring", but Romney hasn't said or done enough to convince me.

I realize that today is the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, but I'm just not reasonably assured that Mr. Romney has had a true road to Damascus experience on the abortion issue.

Perhaps it's time for Senator Brownbank to discuss his record on abortion.

Matt Lewis, no Romney shill, has an article in Townhall.com that calls into serious question some of the lifelong bonifides of Sen. Brownback's pro-life commitment.

We published a podcast today entitled Mitt Romney: Conservative or Not? and a quick summary of the the issues can be summarized here.

In my mind: the charge of flipping is flippant. This week I attended the March 4 life and heard very moving testimonies of those people who had abortion.

Listen, if we can offer support and redemption to those who actually had abortions, why can't we offer support and redemption to those who now agree with us?

The point is that I don't believe Romney is sincere - I think he's more interested in getting nominated than protecting the unborn. I have absolutely NO DOUBTS about Brownback's bona fides. Didn't look like those at the March for Life had any doubts either. Your boy Romney didn't fare so well among the participants (not that he bothered to show up) from the reports I hear.

You guys are probably wasting your time. There is about a 0% chance that I will EVER vote for Romney. I can't speak for the people who frequent this blog, but I doubt many of them are thrilled with Romney, either.

Jay you are free to speak for me anytime!

I would say that the Catholic blogshpere on a whole is leaning strongly towards Brownback.

I'd agree, that Romney is unacceptable to pro-lifers. Sorry. He is a calculating politician who'll say anything to get elected.
