Oh, Those Peace & Justice Types

(Hat tip: Amy Welborn)

Women chain selves to Catholic diocese door to protest deer kill:
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, New York: Two women were arrested after they chained themselves to the front doors of a Catholic diocese building to protest the authorized killing of deer on church property.

"We're appealing to members of the diocese who respect God's teachings of love and compassion of all creatures to halt the inhumane deer killing," Deirdre Guelke, a Hunter College student from Queens, said in a statement before her arrest.

Guelke and Therese Ferreira chained themselves to the entrance of the Diocese of Rockville Centre offices to protest the deer cull at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and in Caumsett State Historic Park.

A marksman with a shotgun has been hunting the deer because of an increase in the number of car accidents and near misses with the animals on local roads. The deer meat has been used to stock a food pantry.

(emphasis added)
My Comments:
Poor misguided creatures (I'm referring to the women, not the deer). I guess it will take several traffic fatalities (I'm referring to human deaths - of which there are already many each year involving accidents with deer) before some people will realize that deer populations need to be thinned. But, then again, maybe not even that will do it for some of these folks whose only knowledge of and experience with deer is what they saw in a Walt Disney movie.

As an aside, I was told a couple of years ago that the present deer population in North America likely exceeds what it did when the first English settlers arrived at Jamestown.

UPDATE
I note with irony that one of the women protesting the deer kill attends Hunter College.

They would neither make good Mosaic Jews nor Texans.

Overpopulation also often leads to starvation. I'd think some buckshot or an arrow through the heart causing rapid internal bleeding and a quick death would be more "humane" than that.

the only tragedy here is that the diocese dished out big bucks for a "sharpshooter," when they could have easily found somone to do it for free, heck if this was in WI, I would of voullentered.

I sympathize with the poor deer, too. But letting them run rampant in a semi-urban area is never a good idea, and feeding the hungry is a good solution. I tend to get very impatient with people whose basic view of nature is strongly influenced by Bambi.

The deer have God-given rights to live peaceable. Psalm 150:6 says to "let everything that has breath praise the Lord." I would think that driving slower to avoid hitting them is kinder than shooting them. Does anyone wonder what God thinks? Psalm 145:9 says that the Lord is good to all and compassionate towards all his works. We destroy everything that gets in our way instead of doing everything for the glory of God as Paul instructed the Corinthians in chapter 10. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. As followers of Christ, we should ask the question 'what would Jesus do?'

That's a sweet sentiment. But your Biblical references don't even touch on the issue at hand. Try these instead:

In Deuteronomy 14:4-5 the Scriptures state, “These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.” This text and others in the Bible make it clear that deer and various other types of wild animals were permissible to eat. We also know that shortly after the great flood in Noah’s day God blessed Noah and his sons and then told them, “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything” (Genesis 9:3). God expanded the menu of permissible food from what it had been prior to the flood.

By the way, you better hurry! After January 31, "Bambi" goes back in the vault.
