Incredibly Stupid Move

Reports are that the GOP has named Senator Mel Martinez to be the new Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Uh, forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't U.S. Senator a full-time job? Looks like the GOP just wants a hispanic-sounding name to be a figurehead at the RNC, rather than someone who can devote his full time to doing the much-needed work of rebuilding following last week's electoral disaster. Martinez won't even be running the day-to-day operation according to the report cited above.

And what happened to Michael Steele? The GOP floats his name as their choice to replace Mehlman, Steele says he's interested, and then the GOP pulls the rug out from under him.

It has been reported that the Administration wants Steele in the Cabinet as - get this - Secretary of HUD. After all, he's a black guy, so he MUST know something about housing projects. Right?

Losing makes the Stupid Party stupider.

I was curious to see how you'd react to this and all I can say my friend is...not so fast!

I know you liked Steele, I did to, he's a good guy, but frankly, I was not as convinced of his social conservative street cred as you were.

Martinez seems a good pick, he is one of the few senators (along with Brownback and Santorum) who was actually vocally supporting a Const. Ammendment to proect marraige (he even took McCain to task for his "let each state decide" possition.) Martinez also did a lot of good work in protecting Terri Schavio. Furthemore the Republican Party needs to reach out to Hispanic voters, now more than ever. The black vote is entrenched democrat for a long time, Hispanics are the wild card, they are in play, they could be the future "values voters" that drive good politicans and causes to victory, or they could get sucked into the dem party. You don't want that.

The Republican Party doesn’t need to reach out to the Hispanics, they need to be Conservative. I agree Martinez is a poor pick.

reaching out to hispanics and reaching out to conservatives SHOULD not be opposing ideas, that is exactly why Martinez is a good pick.

Mel Martinez is a bad pick because he already has a full-time job.

He also doesn't strike me as particularly spectacular when it comes to being a spokesman for a particular point of view. He's blah.

There's nothing "blah" about Michael Steele.

The Republicans are idiots. But, of course, that's why they're called the Stupid Party.

Not to mention he barely won after he ran a horrible, nasty race. Had his opponent not been so liberal, I would have done what I did for the Nelson/Harris race: left it blank. This one left me scratching my head as well.

If they don't reach out to Hispanics, they will soon find themselves a perpetual minority party, maybe even eventually a third party. I agree going with Martinez was dumb, but still...
