Pope Appeals for Afghan Convert's Life

Mar. 27 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) has made an appeal to President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan on behalf of Abdul Rahman, who is facing a possible death sentence on apostasy charges after his conversion to Christianity.

In a telegram sent by Cardinal Angelo Sodano (bio - news), the Vatican Secretary of State, the Holy Father said that dropping the charges against Rahman "would bestow great honor upon the Afghan people and would raise a chorus of admiration in the international community."
